Wargrave: Mr Justice Wargrave was used to present the theme justice throughout the novel when he chooses 10 criminals who escaped punishment for their crimes and took them to the island to bring what he thought was justice, by murdering them. Mr Justice Wargrave murdered each person based upon the severity of their crime. The Guest who had committed what Mr Justice Wargrave thought was the ‘worst crime’ was killed at the end so they had to deal with guilt and knowing that they were going to die for the longest period of time and people who committed the ‘less severe’ crime were killed first so they had to suffer least. An example of this in the novel is when Anthony Marston dies first and Vera Claythorne dies last. Mr Justice Wargrave thought that Anthony Marston’s death was the least severe because he was not intending on killing them so he died first. But Vera Claythorne’s crime was considered the worst by Mr Justice Wargrave because She deliberately sent Cyril to his death so she had to suffer and deal with her guilt for the longest. Agatha Christie used Mr Justice to show how different people interpret Justice differently.
Emily Brent: Mrs Emily Brent presents the theme of justice when her crime is revealed to everyone. Mrs Emily Brent had a young maid who was working for her. One day the maid got pregnant to a man. Mrs Emily Brent is a very religious woman and this was strictly against the religious laws so she rejected the young maid and kicked her out. The maid had nowhere to live or work so she ended up throwing herself into a river and drowning herself. Mrs Emily Brent did this as an act of justice as it was ‘breaking’ the rules of her religious beliefs. Agatha Christie also used Mrs Emily to show how different people react differently due to their opinions and religions.
Vera Claythorne: Vera Claythorne Presented the theme of Justice when she told Cyril to go and swim to the rock knowing that he would drown all so that she would have a chance of becoming married to Hugo. Vera wanted to cover up her crime by pretending to swim out after Cyril and save him from drowning. Vera saw her crime as being Just because she was just thinking about herself and Hugo, who she wanted to marry but Cyril was the only one getting in the way of their marriage. Agatha Christie used Vera who again had a very self-centred belief of what justice meant to show that different types of people have very different opinions of what Justice is.
Agatha Christie used 3 significantly different people and their crimes to explore the theme justice by showing how their goals, Beliefs and Religions played a huge part in what they believed to be justice behaviour and how they acted in certain situations. This is very common with all of the different religions and beliefs nowadays that people will act very different according to what they think and believe.
Hi Jaydon,
Rather than saying that you will address and explain in your introduction, you should outline how you will do that. You need to clearly identify the points you are going to discuss. Be careful to avoid just giving a plot break down throughout your essay as well. I want to hear what you have to say about the novel, not just what happens.
Hi Jaydon,
First off remember you are not permitted to work on this outside of class time. Second refer to my previous comment. A couple other things to consider:
You need to explore author’s purpose. What did the author mean?
Make specific connections to the world outside the novel.
